Dr. Farrah Gafford Cambrice

Farrah Gafford Cambrice, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Prairie View ​A&M University. She earned her undergraduate degree in sociology from Grambling ​State University in 1999, a master’s in Sociology from the University of North Texas in ​2001, and a PhD in Sociology from Tulane University in 2009.


Dr. Cambrice’s research and teaching interests include race, disaster recovery, ​community building, and qualitative methods. Her peer-reviewed research appears in ​Collections: A Journal for Museum and Archive Professionals, Journal of Black ​Studies, Journal of Global Policy and Resilience, and Journal of Urban History.


Her most recent publication, Contemporary Debates in Social Justice: An ​Interdisciplinary Approach to Examining Black and Brown Lives, is an edited book ​featuring essays, empirical research, and interviews concerning health, political, and ​educational inequalities.


Cambrice was awarded the Norman C. Francis Excellence in Teaching Award (2010), ​and Prairie View A&M’s Andrew Mellon Outstanding Faculty Award in 2021.


As a co-principal investigator for the Smart and Connected Rural Communities ​Planning grant, Dr. Cambrice was responsible for leading the community engagement ​efforts to initiate smart technologies in rural communities and she also collaborated ​with a team of scholars from Tulane University and the University of New Orleans ​interested in the recovery of neighborhoods after Hurricane Katrina.


In March of this year, Cambrice was named to the National Academies of Sciences, ​Engineering, and Medicine Board on Gulf Education and Engagement. Board members ​provide strategic guidance to the Gulf Research Program in research studies, projects, ​and other activities.
