Patricia Cage Bibbs entered college coaching to help her alma mater Grambling State University (GSU) to provide a solid foundation for its then fledgling women’s basketball program.

Bibbs' excellence first made its mark on the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) through hard work, dedication and an aggressiveness that helped Bibbs guide the team to big-time victories over major programs previously deemed unbeatable by a Historically Black College and University (HBCU).

In her first stint as head coach of the Lady Tigers, Bibbs directed upset wins over teams including Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Oregon, Syracuse, Rice, Miami, and the University of Kansas.

Bibbs, who also served a stint as interim athletic director at GSU, coached the Lady Tigers’ program to 254 victories. Out of the six SWAC titles she earned at Grambling, three of those came within a four-year span from 1994-97 during which Bibbs became the first coach in SWAC history to lead a team to an undefeated conference season (15-0).

Over her GSU coaching career, Bibbs went 138-44 against SWAC opponents.

Bibbs made her first mark on history during the 2007-08 season when she became the 38th active head women’s basketball coach to earn 400 career coaching wins.

That history is also shown in the numerous honors Bibbs earned over the years, including The YWCA’s Empowerment Award; The Black Women in Sports Foundation Legends Award, and SWAC Lifetime Achievement accolades as well as inductions into The Grambling State University Hall of Fame; Grambling Legends Hall of Fame and the SWAC Hall of Fame.

Bibbs later coached at Hampton University (1997-2004) and North Carolina A&T (2005-11), where she earned her 500th victory, becoming one of two head coaches in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) to do so and the only coach in HBCU history male or female to do it on the NCAA Division 1 level, before returning to GSU to coach her final two seasons (2012-14).
